CHINENGR-16 Embarks on Garbage Disposal Site for Zwedru

Zwedru, capital of Grand Gedeh County, ranks among Liberia’s biggest towns. Economic activity in this southeastern metropolis has been on the increase in recent years and, parallel to this has been an increase in the amount of garbage generated by the local population.

Rubbish litters the town’s streets and residential areas, and the Zwedru City Corporation has had little success meeting the challenge. Besides polluting the environment, the situation could pose a serious threat to health. Concerned, the Chinese Engineer Company (CHINENGR-16) decided to come to intervene.

The Company commander led a reconnaissance on a site appropriate for garbage disposal and designed a construction plan.

There certainly will be obstacles in the way, given that the proposed garbage disposal site is a forest area far removed from the town. It is covered by dense, lush green vegetation towering some two metres high, and there are more than 30 tree stumps to uproot. Then there are the snakes and mosquitoes to deal with, besides the hot, humid weather.

And as if that were not enough to worry about, CHINENGR’s gear is mainly designed for road construction and repairs. Still, at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Engineer Coy looked determined to see the project through, no matter what.
“When we’re done, the people of Zwedru will have a garbage disposal site that can hold some 1,125 cubic metres of garbage,” CHINENGR Commander Lt.-Col. Guan Shouqiang affirmed at the ceremony.

It was attended among others by County officials and the Head of the UN Field Office in Grand Gedeh, Thomas Mtaisi. One after the other, all who spoke at the ceremony praised the Chinese engineers for their hard work and dedication in the region.
