During his first county visit to Grand Gedeh, SRSG Farid Zarif urged the Liberian authorities to step up their efforts to take full charge of the country’s security as the UN Mission in Liberia draws down. With eye on security transition, Security Council extends UN mission in Liberia for another year
17 September 2015 – The Security Council today extended the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) until 30 September 2016, and authorized a reduction in the number of its personnel, as preparations continue for the security transition to the country’s authorities next year.

SRSG welcomes UN Security Council’s decision to extend UNMIL’s mandate for another year

(Monrovia) –The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Coordinator of United Nations Operations in Liberia, Mr. Farid Zarif, has welcomed the UN Security Council’s decision today to extend UNMIL’s mandate until 30 September 2016. “The Security Council’s decision to extend UNMIL’s mandate for another year demonstrates the international community’s commitment to fully support Liberia’s assumption of full security responsibilities by 30 June 2016,” said Mr. Zarif. “In less than 10 months from today, it is expected that Liberia would have assumed responsibility for all aspects of its own security to ensure peace, stability and the protection of the civilian population, taking over the residual tasks still performed by the United Nations Mission in Liberia,” he noted.

3 September 2015 – The World Health Organization (WHO) today declared Liberia free of Ebola virus transmission after the disease had resurfaced in June, and as the country enters a 90-day period of heightened surveillance, the number of cases in the rest of West Africa remained stable at three for the fifth consecutive week.
