Major General Leonard Muriuki Ngondi was commissioned as a Lieutenant of the Infantry Corps from the Kenya Military Academy at Lanet, Nakuru, Kenya, in 1979.
Major General Ngondi is currently the General Officer Commanding the Western Command of the Kenya Army. His previous command and staff appointments include service as an Infantry Battalion Commander, Staff Officer Operations, and Training and Logistics postions at Brigade and Army Headquarters, a Infantry Brigade Commander, and the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command, Kenya, which included overseeing the training and provision of troops for the African Union in Somalia.
Other appointments included: Company Commander in the United Nations Transition and Assistance Group (UNTAG), Namibia; Commanding Officer, Kenya Battalion, in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL); Commandant School of Infantry; and, Deputy Commandant/Chief Instructor, Kenya Defence Staff College.
Major General Ngondi is a graduate of the junior officers’ course and the National Defence College, and he also holds a diploma in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, and a Management Development Course from Kenya Institute of Administration and Executive Development, also in Nairobi.
His Honours and Awards include, The Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) and The Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW).
He is married and has three children.
