In the context of immediate post-conflict Liberia, UNMIL’s R&G Pillar has focused on the restoration of state authority, strengthening key governance systems and institutions, supporting economic recovery, and consolidating peace.
The Pillar has four sections: Civil Affairs: Political, Policy and Planning; Office of Gender Advisor and HIV/AIDS.
The Pillar’s main objectives have been to assist the Government in restoring administrative structures in all 15 counties, through the County Support Teams and the Heads of Field Offices; establishing functional governance institutions; supporting ‘national vision’ processes; and introducing interventions to consolidate peace.
Working collaboratively with the Government and partners, the Pillar has supported the capacity development of the Governance Commission, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, the General Audit Commission, the Lands Commission, and the National Elections Commission.
With Liberia placed on the UN Peacebuilding Commission Agenda, the Pillar also leads UN support for Liberia’s peace-building processes.
