UN Special Coordinator Joins 33rd Commemoration of Lebanon’s Taef Accord

On the 33^rd anniversary of the signing of the Taef Accord, United Nations Special Coordinator Joanna Wronecka joined local and international representatives at a conference organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to highlight the importance of this historic document for Lebanon and the need for its full implementation. This Accord, which was endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 1701 “was not merely a means for ending Lebanon’s civil war (1975-1990) but set a framework for ending sectarianism and reinforcing peaceful coexistence,” the Special Coordinator said in her remarks. Noting how the Taef Accord set a new political system in Lebanon that meets the aspirations of the Lebanese in building the state and its institutions through the adoption of necessary reforms, the Special Coordinator underlined that “the commemoration was an opportunity to mobilize the necessary incentives for the full implementation of that historic document to reinforce Lebanon’s security, stability and prosperity.”
