SRSG Karin Landgren Statement on the Suspension of the 14 October Liberian Senatorial Elections

Monrovia, 09 October 2014 - The proclamation yesterday by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf suspending the holding of the 14 October 2014 Senatorial Elections gives Liberians clarity on this matter. The proclamation is in line with National Elections Commission (NEC) recommendations, which were prompted by the Ebola Epidemic and the State of Emergency

The President has requested that the NEC consult with a broad range of stakeholders, including political parties, independent candidates, civil society organizations, and national and international health authorities to determine the way forward, including on finding a new date for the Senatorial Elections. Keeping the public informed of the options under consideration will reduce uncertainty and speculation. I remain confident that Liberia will move forward in addressing the timing and manner of these elections in a way that best serves the interests of the country and its people.
