Monrovia – UNMIL through its Quick Impact Project has handed over electronic data on inmates in all correction facilities in Liberia to the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation (BCR).
“This marks another milestone in rebuilding of the Liberian criminal justice system,’” said the Officer-in-Charge, Rule of Law, Marcel Akpovo, at the handover ceremony on 2 March at UNMIL headquarters in Monrovia. “Data collection, management and analysis as relates to inmates helps to protect the fundamental rights of people who are under custody, and ensure that their dignity is maintained and protected.’”
The project, funded by UNMIL Quick Impact Project, also facilitated handover of two computers, stationery and other computer accessories to BCR, and training of 45 Correction Officers who have been equipped with skills and knowledge on record keeping with the overall goal of enhancing oversight and accountability in the criminal justice system in Liberia.
“I have confidence in the correction officers trained here by UNMIL. We now have a task every week of furnishing courts with updated data on inmates,” said Assistant Justice Minister for Corrections and Rehabilitations, Hilary Siakor-Sirleaf while receiving the donation on behalf of BCR.
