The first day of August turned out to be a memorable day for some 20 youth in Bomi County. This was the day they were selected by the 32nd Nigerian Battalion in Tubmanburg to undergo a three-month vocational skills training, free of charge. Hairdressing, tailoring, and vulcanizing are among the areas of training managed by skilled Nigerian soldiers.
Launching the training at the NiBatt Camp in Tubmanburg, the Commanding Officer Lt.-Col. Mohammed Jibrin Gambo said that on successful completion of the course, the participants will be awarded certificates and provided with starter tools and equipment needed for them to practice what they have learnt for their livelihoods. He urged the 20 trainees to take the training seriously. He also suggested that in the long term, they can train peers and share these skills so that more will be able to benefit from this worthy undertaking.
In response, Samuel Brown, Superintendent of Bomi County, and Rebecca Benson, City Mayor, both gave thumbs-up to this initiative. They expressed their gratitude to the Nigerian peacekeepers for taking the lead in trying to improve the wellbeing of the local people.
Among those who attended the occasion included Head of Field Office Lena Sagnia, RAO Joe Mshindo, Correction Officer Esther Ojeah, County Gender Coordinator Aminata Pucker, and PIO Officer Frances Alesi.
This project is part of NiBatt 32’s Civic-Military (CIMIC) programme to empower, and assist the local population through provision of basic social services.
