UNMIL hands over equipment to Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency

Monrovia – On 10 March 2017, UNMIL handed over communication and information technology equipment to the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) with the aim of strengthening the capacity of DEA enabling the decentralization of statistics and reporting on drugs to the leeward counties.

“Statistics and records are vital in intelligence gathering and profiling of suspects. It is important that DEA keep proper statistics and records on drug related crimes. Without modern equipment, DEA will not be able to keep records,” said UNMIL Police Commissioner, Simon Blatchly at the handover ceremony at DEA Headquarters, Monrovia. “This project will ensure that operational and administrative reports and suspect information are processed within a timely manner and forwarded to DEA Headquarters for expedition in observance of the 48 hour detention limit, which are a basic human right provided to all suspects.”

“Information filtering from the counties to Monrovia will no longer be handwritten; and it will come as fast as possible.” said DEA Director-General, Anthony K. Souh. “This is one way of modernizing DEA.”

Procured with UNMIL Quick Impact Project funding, the equipment comprised 8 computers, 16 printers, 8 modems and other computer accessories.
