UNMIL
United Nations Mission in Liberia

Closure of UNMIL

The United Nations Mission in Liberia was established in October 2003 to support for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement and peace process, and to assist with the maintenance and restoration of law and order throughout Liberia. The mission successfully completed its mandate on 30 March 2018.

Ten Years of Peace

In 1989, Liberia plunged into a civil war that lasted 14 years and claimed the lives of over 150,000 people. There was a complete breakdown of law and order, and hundreds of thousands were displaced both inside and out of Liberia’s borders.
