UNMIL Officer-in-Charge emphasizes importance of security sector reform in Liberia

Monrovia - UNMIL Officer-in-Charge, Waldemar Vrey today underscored that security sector reform in Liberia will enhance confidence in national security institutions.

“The main objective of every security sector reform supported by United Nations is to ensure that people feel safer through enhancement of the effectiveness and accountability of national security institutions,” Vrey said in a  speech delivered by Marcel Akpovo, UNMIL Chief of Human Rights and Protection at the opening of a two-day international conference on Security Sector Reform at the University of Liberia.

He encouraged the University of Liberia to continue efforts at training the security sector actors, noting that the University contributes to a holistic understanding of the country’s security sector past, present and future.

“It is through education that the knowledge base that sustains the necessary link between security sector reform and peace consolidation processes can be achieved,” said the Mr. Vrey.

The University of Liberia is organizing the conference with the support of UNMIL. The conference provides a knowledge-sharing forum for security sector actors to discuss challenges, opportunities, alternatives and best practices. It will also facilitate the building and sharing of local knowledge in the field of peace and security in Liberia and beyond.
