20 February 2018, Monrovia – A waste recycling project, dubbed Waste to Wealth was concluded today in Monrovia. Green Cities Inc. implemented the project with support from the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Quick Impact Project. The project aimed to create income generation for 100 youth from 10 slum communities in Monrovia through recycling 10,000 tons of waste within three months.

“As UNMIL is leaving the international community will be here for continuous support, and I congratulate you and encourage you to take care of your beautiful land” said UNMIL Chief of Staff, Ms. Eng.

The UNMIL Chief of Environment Unit, Ms. Mulinde, challenged the communities to carry on the task they have successfully started by recycling materials into valuable resources and managing waste.

The project was implemented in West Point, Slipway, Doe, Duport Road, Waterside and Buzzi Quarter. Other communities that also benefitted were Sonniwein, New Kru Town, Red light and Jacob Town, all in Montserrado County.

Project activities entailed sensitization on waste management, training on waste recycling, entrepreneurship, and the collection of waste and materials for recycling.
