    The National Aids Commission has launched a campaign called Know Your Status in three counties. The campaign is intended to increasing the level of HIV testing for young people in Montserrado, Margibi and Grand Bassa where there is high number of cases for the virus.

    Mr. Lincoln Reeves said they have already trained a group of young people in these areas and would be working with them during the campaign as they are targeting two hundred eighty six thousand persons for the campaign. He said the response is encouraging but disclosed that having adequate testing tubes is now a challenge. He said stigmatization and discrimination is still a challenge.

    Coffee Break is UNMIL Radio’s flagship news and current affairs program that highlights issues of concerns to UNMIL, government of Liberia, Civil Society and Grassroots communities. Issues such as peace and reconciliation, elections, women’s issues, current events, governance, rule of law, electricity and road construction among others are captured in the program which is aired Monday-Friday.

    Coffee Break today featured live interviews with the following persons and issues:

    • Dr. Michael Slawon – Director / Commission on Higher Education said the Commission is concern about operation of unaccredited higher institutions of learning in the country.
    • Siatta Scott Johnson – Coordinator / Female Journalist Association of Liberia said FeJal will shortly launch a project geared towards increasing women political participation in the 2017 elections.
    • Nathaniel Solo – Director for Legislative Assistance on Treaty Matters and Laws at the Independent National Human Rights Commission said the Commission has commenced activities to popularize the National Human Rights Action Plan in Liberia.
    • Darius Weamie – Communications Officer /Margibi say road rehabilitation in Kakata has resumed after a long pause.
    • Kaihenneh Sengbeh – Manager for Communication, Media &Public Affairs 

    At the Liberia Revenue Authority holds Regional Domestic Resource Mobilization Dialogue in Grand Gedeh County.

    • United Nations Development Program Goodwill Ambassador the Prince of Norway said building sustainable peace is the first step in achieving the sustainable development goals.
    • The Minister of Commerce and Industry Axel Addy said to achieve some of the sustainable development goals in Liberia, attention needs to be given to the empowerment of small and medium size entrepreneurs.
    • As the legislature goes on Easter break, Lofa County senator Steve Zargo has cautioned political leaders to be mindful of their utterances and actions which have the potential to disrupt the peace.
    • The Elections Coordination Committee (ECC) has released the   final report on its observation of the voter’s registration exercise with a call on the president to recall the nomination of members of the ombudsman office.
    • Oscar Bloh also pointed out that there was no trend of fraud or a systematic exclusion of a particular social or ethnic group from the voter’s registration exercise.
    • The Teddy Sayonkon Foundation has distributed assorted educational supplies and clothes to the Antioch Baptist School in Bassa Town, ELWA and United Liberia Inland Church Academy in Harbel, Margibi County.

  • Back To The Black Box: 06 April 2017

    Back To The Ballot Box is UNMIL Radio’s elections program focusing on the 2017 elections. it is aired every Thursday at 9 o’clock GMT. The program features National Elections Commission officials, civil society organizations and individuals, candidates, aspirants, donors, women groups and all in the 2017 election business. The guest today, Thursday, April 06, 2017 is the Chairman of the National Elections Commission, Cllr Jerome George Korkoya.

    • The Chairman of the National Elections Commission, Cllr Jerome George Korkoya said the government is committed to funding the 2017 elections. He said they are in discussion with the Finance Minister and a decision has been reached that the money requested to complete the voter registration exercise, with the exhibition process inclusive, will be provided. He said the government has the responsibility to fund the elections. He noted that the lack funds inconveniences the Commission’s work.
    • He mentioned that the Commission will follow the decision of the Supreme Court in upholding the Code of Conduct.

    Also, the Chairman noted that the Commission will need some concrete evidence from political parties for not submitting the female 30 percent requirement on their party listing.
