President-elect George Weah has raised a flag declaring no room for corruption under his administration, noting that those wishing to cheat the Liberian people will have no space in his government. Addressing journalists, his partisans and supporters at his first victory press conference held at the headquarters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) in the Monrovia suburb of Congo Town, President-elect Weah said his struggle over the years to become president had a singular but very important mission of positively impacting the lives of grass rooters who are popularly known as the ‘masses.’ Read more

‘Be a Leader for All,’ LEEWARG tells President-elect Weah, Source: Daily OBSERVER

The Liberia Elections Early Warning and Response Group (LEEWARG) has called on President-elect  George Weah to now consider himself as the leader of the country and not to discriminate against anyone, even those who campaigned against him. LEEWARG’s co-chairman, Richard Tolbert III, who read the fifth press statement at ECOWAS Mission Office in Monrovia over the weekend, said his organization welcomes the decision of the Liberian people as expressed through the votes during the December 26 runoff presidential election. “Mr. Weah is everybody’s president now, and as such, LEEWARG has therefore called on the President-elect to treat all with love and care. LEEWARG calls on the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), and their supporters to see their victory as an opportunity to provide leadership for all Liberians, to foster reconciliation, keep the peace and to promote sustainable development,” Tolbert said. Several World Leaders Congratulate Weah, Source: Daily OBSERVER

The Daily Observer reports that several world leaders have congratulated Liberia’s president-elect, George Weah. Ghana President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wrote on his Facebook page: “Warm congratulations to George Oppong Weah on his decisive victory in Liberia’s peaceful presidential run-off, thus becoming the next President of the Republic of Liberia.” Zambia President Edgar Chagwa Lungu congratulated President-elect Weah for his victory and said the victory represents the triumph of democracy and renewed hope for Liberia cementing its democratic credentials.

Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated Mr. Weah for winning the Liberian presidential poll and lauded the Liberian people for the peaceful poll and offered his support to the new head of state. “President-elect Weah’s victory is a triumph of democracy. Kenya will stand with Liberia, for we believe that Pan-African cooperation will win every African the prosperity and freedom they deserve. I look forward to working with President Weah in the service of those ideals,” President Kenyatta tweeted.

Meanwhile, diplomatic observers say they find it strange that aside from President Akuffo-Addo, whose finance minister Kenneth Ofori Atta is a business partner of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, most leaders of ECOWAS, especially Nigeria, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire,  and Sierra Leone  have remain stone-lipped, not extending congratulatory wishes to President-elect Weah and Vice President-elect Jewel Howard Taylor. Gender Minister faces arrest, if…, Source: Daily OBSERVER

The paper reported that the gender minister, Mrs. Julia Duncan Cassell was held in contempt Tuesday by the Commercial Court in a writ it issued on the minister asking her to appear at the court on Thursday, 4 January to show cause why she should not be held in contempt for her failure to comply with a court ruling. Mrs. Cassell is said to have reportedly refused to pay over USD93,805 to Smart Tech Incorporated for services provided to the Gender Ministry in 2016. Read more

“Old” lawmakers want speaker post, Source: Daily OBSERVER

The race to fill the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has intensified with just 13 days to the inauguration of the President-elect, George Weah.  An old lawmaker, Samuel Kogar of Nimba County told the Daily Observer that consultations are underway on who to put forward for the post. He said a newly elected lawmaker might probably be considered if he or she has the necessary and requisite experience. Read more

PACA Welcomes CDC Victory …Urges All Liberians to Work with the New Government, Source: The INQUIRER

A pro-democracy and political movement Patriotic Consciousness Association of Liberia (PACA) has congratulated President and Vice President-elect, George Weah and Jewel Howard Taylor of the Coalition of Democratic Change (CDC) on their overwhelming victory in the recent 26 December 2017 run-off presidential election. PACA in its congratulatory statement Tuesday described the CDC victory as a victory for the Liberian people and urged all Liberians regardless of their political affiliations to embrace the new CDC government which cuts beyond geographic divides.

The national chairman of the Patriotic Entrepreneurs of Liberia (PATEL), a not-for-profit organization, Presley Tenwah has extended heartfelt congratulations to President-elect George Weah for his victory in the December 26 run-off election, this paper reports. Mr. Tenwah wants all Liberians to respect the rule of law and consider Mr. Weah as their new president.

Newly elected Liberia President George Weah to attend CAF Awards, Sources: Ghana Soccer Net and Ghana Web

Newly elected Liberian President George Weah will be one of the top luminaries who will grace this year's Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards in Ghana. Weah, who was elected as president of Liberia in December is expected to arrive in Ghana by mid-day to attend Thursday's event. Aides close to Mr. Weah have revealed that the president-elect is coming to Accra at the invitation of the continent's football governing body, CAF. CAF has invited Mr. Weah as part of the new move by the continental body's leader Ahmad Ahmad to give more recognition to respect to football legends. He is the only African footballer to have won both Fifa World Player of the Year and the prestigious Ballon d'Or. Read more
