Liberia’s elections on Tuesday witnessed massive turnout of hundreds of voters at many polling centers visited by The New Dawn, though some voters expressed frustrations over being pulled around in search of their rightful polling room.

In communities visited so far on the Bushrod Island, a suburb of Monrovia, voting was peaceful, except that there were complaints by voters that National Elections Commission (NEC) workers did not open some polling places on time. Some polling centers were said to have opened by 9am and 10am in parts of Doe Community and Clara Town, thus resulting in difficulties in cutting down long queues.

A heavy downpour of rain drove voters away on Tuesday night in Montserrado County District #11, as centers remained opened as late as 6:30 pm to compensate hundreds of voters who were still in line patiently waiting to cast their votes. But while some voters fled the rain, there were others that remain in the queue in the rain to ensure that they cast their ballots, saying they must vote even if the rain fell heavier.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Tuesday took time out to go to her home county, Bomi, to join other Liberians to vote. Speaking to reporters after casting her vote, President Sirleaf boasted of guiding the transition process. “I feel good because I managed the process to get to this day so I have to feel good about today, but don’t forget that I have three more months,” she said.

Liberia Vote-Counting Continues as Runoff Election Likely, Sources: AP, Euro News, and US News & World Report

Vote counting continues across Liberia following presidential elections that are almost certain to go to a runoff with 20 candidates contesting.

The state-run Liberia Broadcasting System reports Wednesday there likely will be a runoff based on preliminary figures seen by its correspondents. Unofficial early results announced by the station favored ex-soccer star George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change and Vice President Joseph Boakai of the ruling Unity Party. International observers say Tuesday's vote went smoothly despite late voting starts in some counties.

Liberians have voted in large numbers in the first election run entirely by the country’s institutions and security forces since the civil war.

Police officers and election officials who had been preparing for months took their places at polling stations, listening sympathetically to complaints about impatient voters pushing in the queue and missing names on the rolls. Though there were reports of ballots not arriving at stations until mid-afternoon and of a politician being arrested after handing out money, such incidents appeared to be fairly isolated. A video of police dealing with “election violence” which circulated on Facebook turned out to be just a drill.

Liberians went to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new president who will take over from incumbent President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and for 73 members of the lower House of Representatives. The voting started at 8:00 A.M, but voters who are said to be in a jubilant mood started queuing at voting centers as early as 5:30 am.

So far there are no reports of violence or disagreement, and all the polling centers in the country have all received voting materials. “Liberians in jubilant mood are trooping in their numbers to polling centers,” UNMIL Radio reporter Raymond Zarbay said. However, according to reports by state radio correspondent, voting in certain parts of the country, especially hard-to-reach areas, including the Ganta-Guinea border in northeastern Nimba County, started late, due to the late arrival NEC officials with voting materials.

According to Police spokesman Sam Collins, an estimated 6,000 members of the Election Security Task Force comprising officers of the Liberia National Police, Liberia Immigration Service, Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency and Liberia Fire Service have been deployed at all the 5,390 polling centers across the 15 political sub-divisions on the country.
