PUL VP Takes Issue with Judiciary for ‘Continuous’ Harassment, Source: The INQUIRER

The vice president of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has branded the judicial branch of government as a place of harassment clampdown, depression, coercion, and a center of strong intimidation towards the Liberia media. Mr. Octavin Williams alleged that this form of intimidation by the judiciary has created trauma to the media, thus leading to censorship content restrictions. Mr. Williams indicated that the new trademark of the judiciary stems from the reemergence of arbitrary arrest and detention of journalists by past regimes.

Students Abandon Classes for WAEC Fees, Sources: FrontPage Africa and The INQUIRER

The Inquirer newspaper reports that several senior high school students abandoned their various schools and gathered at the headquarters of the main opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) to seek assistance for the payment of their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees from the party leader, Senator George Weah. They said they see Senator Weah as a humanitarian who will not let them down.

IREDD endorses U.S. call for immediate runoff, Source: Daily OBSERVER

The Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD) said there were isolated irregularities in the October 10 presidential and general elections but that the issues were not sufficient to undermine the fundamental integrity of the electoral process, IREDD executive director, Harold Aidoo said, supporting an earlier similar statement by the US Ambassador to Liberia, Christine Elder. Mr. Aidoo said IREDD welcomes the embassy statement that the issue did not reflect what most of the aggrieved political parties have stated in their lawsuit to the Supreme Court.

IOM hosts 2-day officers training on migration data, Source: Daily OBSERVER

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has commenced two-day training on migration data collection and management in Monrovia. The objective of the training is to enhance national capacities on migration data collection, according to IOM national program officer, Adaeze Molokwu.

For road project, House approves USD16.5m loan, Source: INSIGHT

The House of Representatives has approved a loan agreement of 5 million Kuwait Dinars (USD 16,516) from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to assist in funding the Gbarnga-Salayea Road project. It took the decision Tuesday at its 69th day sitting. Reports say Liberia would secure a USD12 million from the Arab Bank for Development in Africa to partially finance the project.

House passes new Revenue Code, Source: INSIGHT

An act to amend the Revenue Code of Liberia has been passed by the National Legislature. The House of Representatives took the decision Tuesday by majority members following a recommendation from its chairman on ways, means, finance, and development planning after consultations with authorities of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) and the Finance Ministry.

Pressure mounts for NEC shakeup, Source: The ANALYST

In a letter to the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, a former special assistant to the chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC) has called for the replacement of the NEC chairman, Jarome Korkoya with commissioner Jonathan Weedor or Jeanette Ebba Davidson whom he said are most knowledgeable commissioners. Josiah Joekai said Mr. Korkorya is not competent to conduct an election that will be deemed credible saying his administration has not demonstrated any sign of impartiality.

Akinsanya resigns from Liberty Party, Source: The ANALYST

The former national chairman of the opposition Liberty Party (LP), Mr. Israel Akinsanya has resigned from the party, Daniel Sando, assistant secretary-general for press and public affairs of the party disclosed Tuesday. He said Mr. Akinsanya’s letter has been forwarded to party chairman, Benjamin Sanvee.

UNDP BOSS project embarks on regional training, Sources: FrontPage Africa, The INQUIRER, and The New Dawn

The UNDP Business Opportunities through Support Services (BOSS) Project says it is conducting a 4-week Business Development Service and Entrepreneur training in four counties. The Training of Trainers (TOT) is a pilot program that commenced in Gbarnga, Bong County and is expected to extend to Grand Bassa, Margibi, and Nimba Counties. About 25 local business development service providers selected from the four counties are undergoing these exercises to improve the quality of entrepreneur services at the county level.

Marcus Zarway, BOSS Project manager says at the end of the exercise, those service providers that will be vetted and certificated will be used to support other small and medium business entrepreneurs in their respective localities, through training opportunities to improve service delivery.
