The United People’s Party (UPP) has rejected what it calls two Voter Registration (VR) rolls for upcoming elections in October. It did so in a communication last week to the National Elections Commission (NEC). The NEC released the VR roll at an Inter-Party Coordination Committee meeting in Monrovia. The electoral commission said a special contact number has been provided to election centers to be used by poll workers to call the central office and verify people VR number if it does not appear on the listing at the center.

Montserrado County Representative Acarous Gray says his party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) wish to produce the next speaker and deputy speaker of the House of Representatives should the party leader, George Weah wins the presidency in the October elections. Making the comment at a dedication program in the Jorkpen town community, Representative Gray said the party hopes to put up candidates for the two positions which he added would enable the CDC puts its development agenda through.

Several residents of the southeastern Liberia have assured female presidential candidate, MacDella Cooper of the Liberia Restoration Party (LRP) that they are with her to the finish line. The pledge was made when Ms. Cooper toured the southeast.

 

Rev. Joseph Wholuba of the United Pentecost Council Assemblies of God Church in Maryland County said they are so excited to welcome the LRP presidential candidate who they have chosen because they believe she is the right one to lead and deliver them from their sufferings.

 

On her part, Ms. Cooper said that it is the responsibility of a government to make sure that every citizen gets basic health care and promised to also drop the ratio of one doctor to 50 patients to something suitable for every citizen.

According to The Analyst, the presidential candidate of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Senator George Weah has paid a courtesy visit to the President of Niger, Mahamadou lssoufou in Niamey. The meeting, the paper reported centered on bilateral issues, regional stability, and sustaining the country’s democracy. President lssoufou lauded Senator Weah for his contribution towards sustaining the peace in Liberia.

Some 20 female politicians have ended one-day training as a step to support women in politics and by creating the environment conducive for their participation in governance. It was sponsored by OXFAM with funding from the Netherlands. Reports say it was also meant to enhance women capacity.

Some group of women at the weekend reaffirmed their commitment to support political parties which will allow women participation in key party positions. At a meeting, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) vice presidential candidate, Jewel Howard Taylor lauded the women of Bong County for allowing her to be their voice and urged them to vote the CDC at the October election.

Commenting on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s farewell speech at the UN General Assembly, followed by interviews with CNN and BBC, where she stressed that it is time for a generational change in Liberia, Montserrado County Representative Acarous Gray of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change said President Sirleaf and Vice President Joseph Boakai had promised to gracefully retire upon the completion of their second term but Mr. Boakai reneged on the pledge and his desire to contest the presidency has caused serious rift within the ruling Unity Party.

 

Representative Gray continued: “They understood that after President Sirleaf, there will be the emergence of a new leader of the Unity Party. They thought that they would have a youthful and energetic leader that will lead the Unity Party into the national theater of the struggle. Unfortunately, Joseph Boakai didn’t listen to that and chose to impose himself; as the result of the imposition on the ruling establishment, my friend Musa Bility left, Hon. Harrison Karnwea left, Madina Wesseh and many other left the party.”

Iman Ali Krayee has warned politicians to be truthful to their word as they campaign for the October elections. Iman Krayee said the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf might have had its own pitfalls but it has largely ensured that Liberia remains on the path of peace and development.

Presidential candidates Joseph Boakai of the ruling Unity Party (UP) and George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) have both confirmed to FrontPage Africa that they will not attend today’s presidential debate to be held in Paynesville.

 

Senator Weah’s spokesman, Sam Mannah said the CDC flag bearer will not participate in the debate due to his meetings with the EU in Brussels and also with the head of the AU in Paris. But the EU Delegation to Liberia says Senator Weah was not invited by them as stated by Mr. Mannah.

 

Regarding the UP presidential candidate, campaign spokesperson Mohammed Ali said Mr. Boakai would not attend the debate because he has a scheduled campaign launch in Grand Cape Mount County today.

 

United States and Liberia Sign Agreement on School Science Program, Sources: FrontPage Africa and GNN Liberia

 

The US Embassy, on behalf of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has signed an agreement with the Education Ministry to implement the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program in Liberia. The program will be piloted this year by Peace Corps Volunteers in 10 public high schools in eight rural counties. Launched in 1995, this international science and education program provides students with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, and to contribute meaningfully to the understanding of the earth’s ecosystem. The goal of this program in Liberia is to encourage more students to explore and pursue studies and careers in science, technology, math, and engineering fields
