The chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC) says all preparations leading to the presidential and legislative elections are on course. Cllr. Jerome Korkoya told a news conference Wednesday at the NEC headquarters in Sinkor that the presidential ballot papers have been transported to a secured location under tight security protection.

The presidential candidate of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), Senator Prince Johnson has accused President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of playing sinister games with the elections. Senator Johnson’s accusation was made during a press conference on Monday following President Sirleaf’s recent meeting with the chairman, 19 magistrates and some other officials of the of the National Elections Commission (NEC) at her private residence before her trip to New York.

The MDR presidential candidate said under no condition President Sirleaf’s meeting with the NEC officials could be void of selfish and devilish plans. He claimed: “An intelligence from within has informed me that President Sirleaf has recommended a list of 5,000 new names to the NEC so they can be recruited to be in charge of the counting of ballot papers right after the elections.”

Presidential candidate Alexander Cummings of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) has promised to create 100,000 jobs if Liberians elect him as president on October 10. Mr. Cummings said his government would concentrate on infrastructure development, invest in agriculture, health, education, the economy, governance, and the rule of law when he unveiled his platform at the party’s headquarters in Monrovia on Thursday.

He added that if elected, his first 100 days as president will see the immediate commencement of the construction of the Kesselly Boulevard to connect Gardnersville to Central Monrovia and the launch of a USD20 million empowerment fund to support women, youth-owned businesses, and farmers.

The presidential candidate of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Alexander Cummings has clarified that he is not in support of gay rights in Liberia and has no intention of legalizing same-sex marriage if he is elected President. Making the clarity at the unveiling ceremony of the ANC’s platform on Thursday, Mr. Cummings described the rumors and allegations as nonsense and a smear campaign being orchestrated by his detractors to discourage his supporters from voting him in October.

The ANC leader was responding to a female supporter, who claimed that she has closed down her small business to campaign for him but of late has become embarrassed with allegations that Mr. Cummings was in support of gay rights in Liberia.

ALP Plans National Prayer Day For Peaceful Elections, Source: FrontPage Africa

The presidential candidate of the All Liberian Party (ALP), Mr. Benoni Urey has disclosed plans to hold a victory parade and an inter-religious thanksgiving service for peaceful elections in Liberia. The service which is expected to be held at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia on 8 October has been dubbed “The Day of the White Handkerchief”. Mr. Urey’s executive advisor, Alexander Whapoe said the ALP is inviting all political leaders, government officials, the international community, and religious leaders to be part of the prayers to ensure a non-violent election.

Mr. Whapoe continued: “Not only are we committed to ensuring that this election is free of violence, but we want to meaningfully contribute to making it violence free by asking for the intervention of the almighty God. It doesn’t matter which faith you belong to, it’s an inter-religious affair,” he said; adding “We think this the greatest degree of statesmanship. Instead of campaigning on the final day, we would rather be seeking God’s blessings for the entire country.”

Nimba County Electoral District #6 Representative Ricks Toweh has called on the citizens of his district not to vote on sentiments, saying they should rather vote for an individual who can do or deliver. Speaking in Tappita at the Liberty Party campaign rally recently, Mr. Toweh cautioned voters to be mindful of making their decisions on October 10 and urged them to vote for “someone who is able to carry development in their communities and the district in general.” Meanwhile, the incumbent lawmaker has called on the voters to vote for him to continue development initiatives he has undertaken in the district.

‘There Were Rumors DDC Solicited Money’-PUL President Coffey, Sources: Daily OBSERVER and The NEWS

The president of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has accused the Deepening Democracy Coalition (DDC), convener of the 2017 Presidential debates of soliciting money from politicians for their participation in the debates. The PUL pulled out of the DDC, following the first presidential debate in Paynesville.

Mr. Charles Coffey told a news conference Thursday that the union withdrew from the DDC for various reasons including rumors that the DDC was soliciting money from some politicians in order to invite them to take part in the debates. “I never wanted to form part of a group that was soliciting money from politicians that could take part in the presidential debates,” Coffey said, adding that the PUL is a reputable institution and it would be wrong for it to be associated with soliciting money from politicians. “That act is wrong, unacceptable,” the PUL president said.

President of Liberia receives Cathedral’s highest honor, Source: The Garden City News Online

Following her address to the UN General Assembly this week, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia, made a pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Incarnation to pray with the congregation. The Episcopal Church has a long history of connection to Liberia, having established strong churches throughout the country beginning with the sending of missionaries in 1836. President Sirleaf was awarded The Dean’s Cross for Distinguished Service by the Very Rev. Michael Sniffen, Dean of the Cathedral, alongside the Right Rev. Lawrence Provenzano, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island.

During the Mass, the Dean said, “It is an honor to welcome to the Cathedral of the Incarnation today, Her Excellency, the President of the Republic of Liberia. President Sirleaf has worshipped at the Cathedral a number of times during her service as president and we are delighted that she has returned on this occasion to pray with us again for the peace of the world.”
