LIBERIA MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

France Pledges €10M to Liberia, Sources: Daily OBSERVER, FrontPage Africa, News Public Trust, The ANALYST, The INQUIRER, The New Dawn, and The NEWS

French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged an initial grant of €10 million to Liberia for immediate road maintenance while modalities are worked out for a more comprehensive and sustainable development assistance package for Liberia. President Macron also announced he will meet with EU officials in Brussels in two weeks along with a technical team from Liberia to rally support for the construction of Liberia’s road network.

President George Weah named the construction of roads, agriculture, education, healthcare, and the high unemployment of Liberian youths as key priorities of his leadership. He also initiated discussions leading to the front-loading of USD45 million of additional financing from Liberia’s three-year allocation of USD210 million to help stabilize the Liberian economy. President Weah met his French counterpart on his first official State visit to France on Wednesday and was received at the Élysée Palace.

In another development, while in France, the Liberian leader also met with the vice president of the World Bank, Makhtar Diop and the meeting concluded that an additional budget support of USD20 million will be provided to the Liberian government in June this year. This is in addition to the USD24.7 million grant earlier given to Liberia by the World Bank. Read more

CENTAL Wants Weah, Others Declare Assets, Source: The INQUIRER

The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) has made several recommendations intended to reverse the trend and improve Liberia’s standing in the region and globally. CENTAL in a release issued Thursday recommends that President George Weah and his officials declare and publish their assets as an important step in promoting accountability and addressing corruption in the government.

The Senate Thursday, received reports from various committees, all recommending confirmation for nominees, among them Cllr. Frank Musa Dean as justice minister and attorney general. In its report, the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims, and Petitions informed the plenary that the justice minister and attorney general-designate was qualified for the position. Others confirmed by the Senate in executive session Thursday included Jarvis Witherspoon, chief of protocol; Ambassadors-at-Large: Ibrahim Nyei, Jarjar Kamara, Marie Coleman, and Robert Lormia all Inspector Generals for Foreign Service. The Senate Committees on the Judiciary and Defense and Intelligence also recommended the confirmation for Prince Mulbah, Deputy Police Inspector General-designate for Crime Service Division/Criminal Investigation Division, and Robert Budy, Deputy Police Inspector General-designate for Operations. 4,170 Vessels Illegally Flying Liberia Flag – Representative Kogar, Source: New DEMOCRAT

The chairman of the House Committee on Commerce and Industry says there are 4,170 vessels flying the Liberian flag with no financial benefit to the country. Representative Samuel Kogar told his colleagues Tuesday during a session that the current maritime law is weak with respect to how much Liberia’s earns on a ship. Representative Kogar is meanwhile seeking review and amendment of the maritime law that would better position the country to benefit from its maritime resources and strengthen global partnership with reputable shipping industries.

Man Stabbed to Death in Kakata City, Source: FrontPage Africa

A commercial bus driver identified as Abu Sesay was Wednesday found dead in Kakata, Margibi County. Eyewitnesses said Sesay died after some unknown persons stabbed him. He was pronounced died by doctors at the Charles Henry Rennie Memorial Hospital in Kakata City upon arrival. No arrest has been made in connection with the crime, but police detachment in Kakata has launched a forensic probe into the matter and a manhunt for the culprits. Read more

FAO Builds Smallholder Farmers Capacity, Sources: New DEMOCRAT and The NEWS

The FAO in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture has opened a capacity building exercise for smallholder vegetable and poultry farmers. A release said the training is geared toward enhancing social cohesion and improve the productivity of valuable vegetable. Approximately 40 farmers, mostly women and youth from Margibi and Montserrado counties are obtaining knowledge and skills in Farmer Field School (FFS) methodology, concept, and principles. According to the release, when this knowledge is acquired, it will enable farmers to regularly meet, discuss common problems affecting their farms, and conduct practical experiments to mitigate and enhance productivity. The training runs from 20 February to the 3rd of March this year. Read more
