President George Weah has issued a stern warning here to his officials and members of the public to stop alienating people on the basis of partisanship. Giving the warning Sunday at the Winner’s Chapel in Congo Town, President Weah stressed that no Liberian should be judged based on party lines. The president urged that everyone should embrace each other for the common interest of the country, reminding Liberians that campaign and elections are long over. According to Mr. Weah, says he is President for everyone, and not for a specific party, thus, emphasizing that Liberians must join hands to develop the country. Read more

Senators are divided over the confirmation of a senior Finance Ministry nominee who responded Jesus! When asked what is fiscal policy? Four members of the 15-man Senate Committee on Ways, Means, Finance, and Development Planning Thursday protested by not signing the confirmation hearing report of the deputy finance minister-designate for administration, Rebecca McGill. Senators Geraldine Doe Sheriff, Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, Armah Jallah and J. Gbleh-Bo Brown did not sign. “It is my right to sign or not to and I have chosen not to sign the document on the deputy finance minister-designate confirmation report,” Senate Sheriff said. Ms. McGill appeared before the Senate committee in February clueless in relations to the ministry’s core functions. She fumbled at several intervals when making her presentation and could not explain to Senators for instance, what a fiscal or monetary policy is when asked. Read more

The gender, children and social protection minister has alarmed that over 300,000 persons are living in extreme poverty in and out of Monrovia. Speaking Friday at a workshop on HIV and Social Protection Planning, Williametta Saydee Tarr said the National Social Protection Strategy and Policy is intended to address the needs of those in the community that are extremely poor and vulnerable to economic shocks. Mrs. Tarr said Liberia cannot realize its transformation agenda without scaling the social protection strategies that can restore human dignity and foster social cohesion. “Social Protection programs are known to reduce poverty and vulnerability and from these interventions, they have a significant impact, but in Liberia, the need is much greater than the vulnerability of resources to take the program to scale,” the gender minister added.
