Back To The Black Box: 06 April 2017

Back To The Ballot Box is UNMIL Radio’s elections program focusing on the 2017 elections. it is aired every Thursday at 9 o’clock GMT. The program features National Elections Commission officials, civil society organizations and individuals, candidates, aspirants, donors, women groups and all in the 2017 election business. The guest today, Thursday, April 06, 2017 is the Chairman of the National Elections Commission, Cllr Jerome George Korkoya.

  • The Chairman of the National Elections Commission, Cllr Jerome George Korkoya said the government is committed to funding the 2017 elections. He said they are in discussion with the Finance Minister and a decision has been reached that the money requested to complete the voter registration exercise, with the exhibition process inclusive, will be provided. He said the government has the responsibility to fund the elections. He noted that the lack funds inconveniences the Commission’s work.
  • He mentioned that the Commission will follow the decision of the Supreme Court in upholding the Code of Conduct.

Also, the Chairman noted that the Commission will need some concrete evidence from political parties for not submitting the female 30 percent requirement on their party listing.
