Bomi Central Prison Gets More UNMIL Support

Two sets of sewing machines were donated to Bomi Central Prison in support of ongoing skills training programmes for its inmates. Human Rights Officer Jean-paul Mugabowishe presented the machines on behalf of the Bomi Field Office. He said it is a gesture to help inmates to become professional tailors and to contribute meaningfully to society on their release from prison.

Receiving the items, Bomi County Prison Superintendent Clarence Dono said the offer signifies commitment to rehabilitating the lives of Liberians at all levels. The inmates praised UNMIL for the gesture noting that the mission has done a lot for the inmates, including a health post by Quick Impact Project. The health post comprises of a pharmacy, a short stay, bath and screening rooms, all valued at US$ 25,000. Superintendent Dono said that the clinic is managed by the government hospital in Tubmanburg, which has made available a resident nurse at the clinic. The Liberia National Red Cross made an initial donation of assorted drugs and food items to the prison when it was turned over recently.

The prison is constructed close to the 11th Judicial Circuit to promote easy access to court for the accused and promote speedy trail. However, many human rights activists continue to lament over prolonged pretrial detention. Bomi County Attorney Jumah Karnley says practical measures are being put in place to change the situation but noted failure of witnesses to appear in court has been a leading factor to the situation.
