Chinese Engineers Rehabilitate Airfield

Early in April CHINENGR-17 deployed in the coastal town of Greenville to give its airfield a facelift.

The importance of the airfield in Liberia’s transport infrastructure cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, overuse and poor maintenance of this critical hub to both UNMIL and the host community had left especially the runway in serious disrepair.

Rehabilitation works were estimated to last two months, but the Chinese Engineer Coy pulled the job in just four weeks.

From 10 March through 5 April, the Engineer Coy cleared vegetation on the 1.4 km runway, before compacting the surface.  They also provided some 84 drainage outlets, each about two metres wide. Four parking lots spanning 200 square metres were also rehabilitated, as well as some 120 square metres of bumpy ground around the fuel station.

The Chinese Engineer Coy made the job look quick and easy. But it was indeed fraught with challenges, not least of which was the long distance from their base in Zwedru to Greenville. It was no easy task moving heavy equipment from Zwedru to Greenville. Construction material, too, had to be transported over long distances.

The peacekeepers were applauded for their work by Chief Force Engineer Col. Shameem Jaglul who visited the airfield on 3 April to see things for himself.

CHINENGR-17 also acknowledged support received from their Chinese FPU-3 compatriots stationed in Greenville.
