Ghanaian Peacekeepers Extend Humanitarian Assistance in Grand Bassa

Members of the Ghanaian contingent in Buchanan (GHANBATT-16) continue to extend a hand of friendship to the people of Grand Bassa with the provision of humanitarian assistance to various segments of the population.

After offering teaching assistance in senior high schools and the community college in Liberia’s second city, the Ghanaian peacekeepers have turned to healthcare delivery, providing drugs to the Government Hospital in the city, and giving free medical services to inmates of the county’s only prison.

Presenting the more than US$ 600 worth of assorted drugs to the hospital in Buchanan, GHANBATT CIMIC Officer Capt. Francis Lokko said the gesture was to support healthcare delivery in the county. The Officer-in-Charge of the hospital, Joseph Zondoe, thanked the Ghanaian peacekeepers for the donation, and assured them that the drugs would be used for their intended purpose.

The peacekeepers also took an entire Saturday off and cleaned up the surroundings of the hospital and a few of the wards.

The peacekeepers from Ghana also held a one-day medical outreach at the Buchanan Central Prison, conducting general checks on the 71 inmates and eight officers at the detention facility. They checked their blood pressure and discussed health issues with the inmates.

The peacekeepers presented assorted items made up of washing and bath soaps, tooth pastes, toiletries and cooked meal for the inmates.

“The medical outreach will be conducted frequently to ensure that both inmates and prison officers remain healthy,” said Capt. Lokko.

Deputy Superintendent of the prison Thomas White thanked the peacekeepers, describing the gesture as a “blessing.” The Buchanan Central Prison has no permanent clinic and medical supplies are not readily available.

Similarly, the Ghanaian peacekeepers also presented three containers of soap-making chemicals to the God’s Heritage Orphanage in the Four Houses Community in Buchanan.

Apart from undertaking a string of humanitarian and Civil Military Coordination activities, the Ghanaian peacekeepers have recently begun training the first batch of more than 100 Liberians in plant maintenance, building and construction, ICT and electrical installations at the Ghanbatt Technical Information and Communication Technology Institute. The initiative is meant to equip the locals to learn a living and reduce unemployment in the country.
