Jordanian Peacekeepers commended for their contribution to UNMIL and Liberia’s peace

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Coordinator of United Nations Operations in Liberia Karin Landgren, has applauded members of the Jordanian Formed Police Unit 1(FPU) for the critical role they have played in implementing UNMIL’s mandate to support the Government and people of Liberia in their efforts to consolidate peace and develop their country.

"Since their deployment in 2003, the members of Jordanian Formed Police Unit have demonstrated a great sense of responsibility and professionalism in carrying out their duties in UNMIL; each and every one of them, playing a crucial role in Liberia’s peace process.”, said the SRSG at a medal award ceremony held at the German Embassy in Monrovia on Wednesday January 30, 2013.

The UN Envoy particularly thanked the Jordanian FPU 1 for enhancing security at the Monrovia Central Prison (MCP) and quickly responding to eventualities. “Your practical support to Liberia’s peace and stability is shown by your effort to assist the LNP, by assigning 45 of your officers and a Quick Reaction Team at the Monrovia Central Prison. You have successfully undertaken the difficult task of escorting inmates to court on daily basis, and to the hospitals when the need arises.”

The SRSG also praised members of the Jordanian FPU for their humanitarian activities such as providing free medical outreach services and food to inmates at the Monrovia Central prison and local communities.

The Jordanian UN medal award ceremony was attended by Deputy SRSG/Governance and Recovery, Mr. Aeneas C. Chuma, UNMIL Force Commander, Major General Leonard Muriuki Ngondi, UNPOL Commissioner John Nielsen, Director of Mission Support Mr. Hubert Price, Liberia National Police Inspector-General, Chris Massaquoi, diplomats, and senior UNMIL military and civilian staff.
