Open day on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325

8-9 February 2018, Buchanan, Grand Bassa County - In recognition of the 18th  Anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 and in response to the call in SCR 1325 urging consultation with local and international women’s groups, the UN Gender Theme Group (GTG) is hosting  a Global Open Day on 8 and 9 February 2018. Women will identify Women Peace and Security priorities for Liberia in 2018 and evaluate progress made on the 2017 recommendations. They will also play the catalytic role of convening, facilitating and advocating for peaceful, democratic, equitable and sustainable processes of governance, conflict resolution and development among others.

Over the past years, some recommendations have been reiterated indicating that responses have not been to the satisfaction of the women of Liberia. The recurring themes include: lack of accountability and transparency for Women Peace and Security indicators; Women’s political participation, access to justice and protection and effective response to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

The Global Open day forum discusses and poses challenging questions on impediments to the full implementation of the Women Peace and Security Agenda. This year’s commemoration guided by the theme: ‘Maintaining Women’s peace and security to enhance dignity’ will provide action oriented recommendations for the Government, International Community, NGOs and the women of Liberia; focusing on sustainable measures and overcoming persistent barriers.
