Ukrainian Aviation Unit commended for its contribution to UNMIL and peace in Liberia

At a medal award ceremony held in Monrovia on Thursday 6 December, 2012, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Rule of Law, Louis M. Aucoin, commended Ukrainian peacekeepers for their contribution to UNMIL and Liberia.

The Deputy UN envoy commended Ukraine for playing a vital role in UN peacekeeping operations describing it as a significant troop-contributing country and a staunch supporter of peace efforts around the globe. “Since the very first years of Ukraine’s independence, more than 28,000 military and civilian personnel have discharged their noble mission under the UN flag in 20 peacekeeping operations,” he said. “Ukraine’s participation has had an impact from Afghanistan to Kosovo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Ivory Coast and other countries."

Mr. Aucoin praised the 274 Ukrainian officers for carrying out their tasks with dedication and professionalism. “Through your surveillance and air patrols you have covered the width and breadth of Liberia, providing the mission with critical information on threats to peace, ensuring stability in the region, particularly along the border. Despite the prevailing challenges you have worked diligently, transporting personnel, and providing support to the Force,” he added.
The Deputy UN Envoy particularly expressed his gratitude to the Ukrainian Aviation Unit for their search and rescue aerial operation that saved a Liberian man from drowning.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony included UNMIL Force Chief of Staff, Brig.-Gen. Hugh Van Roosen, Director of Mission Support, Hubert Price; visiting journalists from Ukraine and other UNMIL Senior military and civilian staff.
