UNMIL Supports Model Village and Orphanage in Buchanan

Residents of Grand Bassa have become the proud owners of an innovative agricultural project, and a local orphanage has been refurbished and provided with an assortment of items for the upkeep of the children.

The multi-purpose agricultural project, under the name “Model Village,” located at Barconnie community on the outskirts of the Grand Bassa administrative capital, Buchanan, comprises farming, cassava processing, poultry, and piggery. In addition, the Model Village will serve as a training centre for computer literacy and vocational skills such as sewing.

The items donated to the God’s Heritage Orphanage included a generator, a television set, a video deck, a large freezer, bags of rice, a large quantity of mattresses and cooking utensils. The orphanage was also provided with window screens and mosquito nets as preventive measures against malaria.

The two projects, funded through UNMIL Quick Impact Projects, are the brainchild of Chief CIMIC Officer Lt. Col. James Mosser.

“These are the two projects I wanted to implement to serve as a model, and as an inspiration to other UN peace missions around the world,” he points out, adding, “the primary foundation of the two projects is children and their health.”

Liberia is Mosser’s first UN mission, and he is in Africa for the first time. He took the projects as his personal mission to contribute to a success story of a community. “I made a promise a year ago that I would make a difference in my small little way to touch the lives of children, to positively change the outlook of a community.”

Mosser, who is ending his tour of duty in Liberia, expressed his determination to solicit support for the sustenance of the two projects.

The Proprietress of the God’s Heritage Orphanage, Dorothy Kumeh, and the Chairman of the Model Village, Garpu Gbarkon, expressed appreciation to UNMIL, particularly Mosser for the projects, and promised to effectively manage them to ensure that they achieve their intended purposes.
