UNMIL supports the SSR Think Tank to convene an open dialogue on human security at the University of Liberia

On 19 April 2017, UNMIL supported the SSR Think Tank of the University of Liberia to convene an open dialogue to discuss human security. Around 35 participants from the security institutions, civil society and motorcyclist groups and UNMIL attended the meeting. Presentations on human security concepts and practices were conducted by invited speakers, Bartolomeo Coley from the Independent Human Rights Commission and Peter Zazay from the Liberian Immigration Services. The participants discussed the challenges and opportunities to promote human security for the Liberian people and suggested the adoption of a holistic approach for the reform of security sector through. The forum also enabled a broader consultation on the scope of the public safety in Liberia, in the light of the roadmap currently being developed by the Ministry of Justice with UNMIL support. The UNMIL Security Sector Reform Officer, Germana Dalberto, noted that the engagement of civil society and security sector actors at the SSR Think Tank dialogue allows the perspective of the general Liberian population to be factored into security policy-making and governance processes in the country.
