Zwedru Prisoners Get Free Medical Care

Over 90 inmates at the National Palace of Correction (NPC) in Zwedru, received free medical consultation and treatment as a result of the Indian FPU-2 in Sector B-3 organizing a medical outreach in collaboration with the prison authorities on 20 November, 2013.

Indian FPU2 senior medical officer, Dr. Mohd Akber, said most of the inmates were treated for minor ailments, including mild respiratory problems and skin infections.

The initiative was the first by the new batch of Indian FPU-2 officers who deployed in Grand Gedeh County late last October. And it was well appreciated by the prisoners.

“We have the right to medication, but we don’t get it,” an inmate with stomach ulcer moaned. “We really thank the medical team for the assistance.”

NPC Director, Joseph Sumo, commended the team for the assistance and encouraged other humanitarian bodies to identify with the inmates.

The Contingent Commander of the Indian Formed Police Unit-2, Col. Shankarlal Sengupta, challenged the inmates to demonstrate good behaviour.

“Control your thoughts, nurture your mind.  If you can control your thought you can control your life,” Sengupta told the inmates.

Head of Field Office Thomas Mtasai thanked the Indian FPU-2 for the assistance and encouraged the inmates to focus on the future and forget the past.

“If you keep focus on developing yourself while you are here, when you get out there you will have a better impact and you will have more success than even the people who have been out there all this time,” Mtasai reminded the inmates.
