Chinese Contingent donates to Zwedru School

The 731 pupils of Doe Community School in Zwedru are not likely to forget this year’s commemoration of the International Day of Peacekeepers by the UN fraternity in Grand Gedeh County. At least, not for a while.

It was a pleasant surprise for them when, on the eve of the 29 May event and at very short notice, the Chinese contingent in Zwedru swarmed the foregrounds of their school with an assortment of didactic material and equipment.

The Chinese Engineer Company (CHINENGR) and their compatriots of the Chinese Level 2 Hospital (CHINMED) had randomly picked the primary school for the donation, which was one of several community outreach and human investment activities by UN Peacekeepers across Liberia, in the build up to the annual memorial of fallen Blue Berets. The Chinese Contingent had also carried out a clean-up campaign in Zwedru, sweeping some of the town’s streets clean.
The donation to Doe Community School included exercise books, school bags and sports equipment, and the gesture drew applause from the highest quarters of the County Administration, with Superintendent Peter S. Solo personally attending the ceremony.

In a brief statement, Solo hailed China’s support for the post-war reconstruction effort in Liberia, especially in the construction of roads and other infrastructure. Among other assistance, the Superintendent cited construction of the Fendell Campus of the University of Liberia, coupled with scholarships offered to Liberian students by the Peoples Republic of China.

As a mark of gratitude, the County Education Office presented the CHINENGR and CHINMED Commanders with certificates of appreciation.
