Nepalese Provide Free Medical Service for Prison Inmates

Just before their end of duty in September after seven months of service in Sector A1, members of the NEPAL-3 Formed Police Unit (FPU) carried out a free medical outreach for the benefit of the inmates of Tubmanburg Central Prison (TCP) in Bomi County. They also donated assorted stationeries and sporting materials.

Operations Officer Karan Dhungana said the medical outreach aimed at addressing TCP inmates’ health problems while the sporting, stationaries and games were intended to facilitate record management and recreational activities. “Basically in support of the rehabilitation component of the Bureau of Corrections programs of the Ministry of Justice”, he added.
Twenty-four inmates were treated all of whom were male.

Prison Superintendent Clarence Dono received the items on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and thanked NEPAL-3 FPU for the assistance. “Most of our inmates often fall ill with diseases such as respiratory, skin and malaria infections and seeking urgent medical attention has been a real challenge,” said Dono adding that poor transportation and security protection are the common risk factors facing inmates.

During their tour of duty in the Sector, the Nepalese peacekeepers worked closely with communities to build their resilience to rule-of-law and personal security, said Dhungana. They also supported community sanitation programmes through cleanup campaigns and regular night and day patrols. He explained that in April they carried out a free medical outreach that benefitted 110 physically challenged persons in Bomi while two of their medical doctors continued services three times a week at the Monrovia Central Prison benefiting more than 500 inmates to date.

The day long outreach was witnessed and attended by representatives of the Tubmanburg City Corporation, the County Superintendent, the Liberia Government Hospital and other UNMIL Military and Civilian personal assigned in the county.
