PakMed Runs Month-long Eye Camp in Harper

Last 19 December the Pakistan Medical Hospital in Harper launched a one month camp offering free eye care, with Eye Surgeon Maj. Omar Ishtiaq carrying out all needed surgery.

The programme was launched by the Sector B Commander, Brig.-Gen. Tahir Mehmood Wafai, who seized the occasion to hand out certificates to some Nursing students of the WVS Tubman University and LNP officers who had completed Basic Life Support training conducted by PakMed Level 2 Hospital. In addition, the LNP received 10 First Aid kits.

Brig.-Gen. Tahir also donated a desktop computer to the Harper Demonstration Elementary and Junior High School, along with four footballs.

At the launch of the eye camp, PakMed Level II Hospital officer commanding, Lt.-Col. Muhammad Alli called on county authorities to mobilize patients with cataract and other eye problems to benefit from the free treatment.

From its own resources the Pakistani Level II hospital procured 20 Intra Ocular Lenses and other material required for cataract surgery at the camp.

The initiative was praised by Maryland HoFO Corinna Vigier, who said the efforts of PakMed serve the cause of the United Nations.

Also welcoming the move, Maryland County Health Officer Dr. Odell W. Kumhe noted Pakmed’s capacity building support to the health sector, including the Health Department of Tubman University and JJ Dossen Hospital.

The Pakistanis have since rolled out a comprehensive training plan, including on-the-job training in lab, radiology, OT, intensive care and other interventions for Nursing Students of WVS Tubman University, besides technical training for the paramedical staff of the JJ Dossen Hospital Harper.
